One Button: How Kids Use It
Teach a kid (and a parent) the entire interaction model in five minutes.
What you’ll need
Section titled “What you’ll need”Nothing but the device. There is exactly one physical button, on the side — no touch screen, no dials, nothing else to press. The “wheel” you see on the little screen is just how choices are laid out; the button is what turns it. Every single thing the device does is reached with three gestures on that one button.
The three gestures, in the order a kid learns them:
- Tap — move one step. Each tap rolls the wheel to the next choice, and the device speaks the label of whatever lands in the middle, so a kid never has to squint to know where they are.
- Double-tap — choose. Two quick taps open the thing in the middle: go into Listen, pick a playlist, call the contact on screen.
- Hold — leave. Pressing and holding steps back out of wherever you are. Today a hold takes you back one screen at a time; the plan is for it to jump straight back to the home wheel from anywhere.
The one twist worth teaching: on screens where the device listens to you (asking a question, recording your voice), hold means talk instead of leave — press and hold, speak, let go, exactly like a walkie-talkie. Those screens have their own clear way out, so nobody gets stuck.
That’s the whole model. From the home wheel a kid taps through the big destinations — Listen, Talk, and the rest — double-taps in, and holds to come home.
The exact timing of the gestures (how fast a double-tap, how long a hold) is deliberately still being tuned for small hands, and it is meant to be settled by watching real kids use real devices — not by guessing.
Design direction — not built yet.
Teach it as a game, not a lesson. “Get to a story before I count to ten.” “Call Grandma without me pointing at anything.” Three gestures is a game a kid wins in one sitting, and winning it is how the device becomes theirs — a five-minute race beats any explanation a parent can give.
Trust the spoken labels, especially with pre-readers. The device speaks whatever lands in the middle of the wheel, so a kid who can’t read yet navigates entirely by ear: tap, listen, tap, listen, double-tap. Teach “listen for it” rather than “look for it” and the small screen stops mattering at all.
Teach hold-to-talk exactly like a walkie-talkie: hold, speak, let go. Kids who have never seen a walkie-talkie still get it in one try, because the gesture feels like holding a door open while you speak. The everyday version of this — calls and voice notes — lives at Talking.
Tell your kid — and mean it — that there is nothing to break. Every press does something safe, every path leads back to the home wheel, and no combination of taps and holds can buy, delete, or install anything. A kid who knows they can’t break it explores; exploring is how the whole model sinks in.
Notice what the canvas doesn’t do. It stays calm on purpose: no feed to scroll, no badges, no notifications chasing your kid’s attention. The device waits for the kid — never the other way around.
For the fridge, the whole interface fits on a sticky note: tap = look around, double-tap = choose, hold = go home — or talk, on the screens that listen.
Troubleshooting

Pressing the button does nothing. Check power before anything else. A sleeping device wakes on a press; a dead one doesn’t. If the canvas stays dark, plug in the USB-C cable, give it twenty minutes, then press and hold the side button to power on. A device that’s charged and awake always answers a press somehow — silence means charge, not settings.
The kid ended up on the wrong screen. Press and hold. A long hold walks you back toward the home wheel, and nothing on the device is more than a hold or two from home — that’s the promise of the model. Wherever you land, the wheel speaks its labels, so “hold, then listen” recovers from anywhere without a parent needing to look at the screen.
They held the button and spoke, but nothing was sent. On the screens that listen, the hold has to last the whole message — hold, speak, then let go, like a walkie-talkie. Letting go halfway cuts the message off, and a too-brief hold sends nothing at all. The fix is one phrase, said once: “hold it until you’re done talking, then let go.”
Still being decided
Section titled “Still being decided”- Adopt hold-jumps-straight-home, or keep today’s one-screen-at-a-time back? Straight-home makes “hold means home” true everywhere and makes every rescue one gesture; step-by-step back preserves “leave” as a gentler, local action. The troubleshooting story on this page depends on which one ships.
- Adopt fixed gesture timings now, or keep the windows open until real kids have been watched? Shipping numbers ends the tuning debate; holding them open honors the stated intent that small hands, not guesses, settle how fast a double-tap is and how long a hold.
- Adopt the model as fixed for everyone, or give parents one dial? A fixed model keeps every yoyopod identical — any kid can drive any device — but a single adjustable hold duration would help kids whose motor skills need more forgiveness. Anything more than one dial is scope creep.
- Adopt one universal meaning per gesture on every screen, or allow per-screen exceptions beyond hold-to-talk? Hold-to-talk is already the one sanctioned twist; each further exception makes the fridge-note version of the interface a little less true.
